Birthday Treats

Hawthorne has a non-edible treat policy for birthdays.  Please do not send any treats containing food or candy.  It is not necessary to send anything, but if you would like to send something some ideas are:  a book for the class, pencils, stationary, erasers, mini notebooks, puzzles, etc.

Class size--20 students

Going to be absent?

Please remember to call the absent line if your child will be absent--630-782-5794

Work cannot be sent home ahead of time, but will be available when they return to school.  Not everything is able to be sent home, much of our learning happens through our discussions, stories and hands on activities.  Please send the completed assignments back within a week.

First graders can bring a daily snack of fresh fruits or vegetables.  Only fresh fruit and vegetables are allowed, per district policy.  Water bottles are also welcomed.  Please make sure the snack is ready to eat--oranges, cuties peeled.  Please pack the snack separate from their lunch.  Thank you!

Winter Weather

Please remember the kids go outside for lunch recess every day the feel like temperature is 0 and above.  If there is snow, kids must have snow pants and boots to play in the snow.  This keeps them from being soaking wet and freezing the rest of the day.  Please make sure to send them with these items when there is snow on the ground.  Please label all of their winter gear--gloves, snow pants, hats and boots.  There are a lot of winter items in our cubbies, labeling everything is very helpful!

First Grade Learning

Reading Workshop

We read about amphibians.  We worked on using thinking marks to track our thinking throughout our reading.  We used !, ? and a heart to monitor where we stopped and had a question, brain pop or really enjoyed something we read.  Stopping and thinking while reading is important!

This week we worked on 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less.  We showed our work using quick tens and ones to add and subtract.  We also started comparing two digit numbers determining whether you need to look at the tens or ones of a number.  We also started using > and < to compare numbers.  We took our mid-module on Friday.

Writer's Workshop

We introduced opinion writing.  We read, In My Opinion and came up with reasons to agree or disagree with the main character.  We also talked about the difference between fact and opinion.

We are learning about amphibians.  The kids had a great time researching different amphibians on PebbleGo.com.

R-controlled vowels ar and er.  We worked on building words and adding different endings.

WIN Time

In my room we are doing an author study about Doreen Cronin.
