October in Hawthorne's Outdoor Classroom

Third grade carrot harvest and vegetable soup!

On October 15th and 16th, Hawthorne third graders harvested carrots, tomatoes and onions that have been growing in the Outdoor Classroom’s organic vegetable garden all summer.  Students planted the carrot seeds on the last day of school when they were in second grade. Teachers and parents from the Outdoor Classroom team tended the garden over the summer. Teachers read the book “Who Grew My Soup?” to their students. Every third grade student got to pick a carrot to take home, plus save some for the vegetable soup they made in class the next day. Yum!

Teachers and staff met in the Outdoor Classroom on October 8th

During a portion of their meetings on late start day, teachers and staff met in the Outdoor Classroom to hear about opportunities to tie curriculum in with hands-on learning experiences. The Outdoor Classroom has seating for two classes, a weather station, butterfly garden, organic vegetable garden, compost bins, rain garden and Illinois native plants that are habitat for many species of birds and insects.
