Walk on Wednesday (WOW) and Safe Routes to School (SRTS)

During the fall and spring families are encouraged to walk/bike (scooter, roller blade) to school and leave the car at home on Wednesdays. Students who choose to participate will get a green "footprint" hand stamp, available at the corner of Cottage Hill & Arthur before the first bell. Parent volunteers from each neighborhood will be assigned and can walk your child to school if your schedule doesn't allow you to walk with them on Wednesdays. The volunteer list will be posted on the PTA website in September. October 9th is International Walk to School Day and events are planned for all students to participate in that morning at school and a crossing guard will be posted at the tracks located on 1st & Addison.

All D205 elementary and middle schools participate in the national program, Safe Routes to School (SRTS). There are representatives from each school that serve on a committee that meets several times a year. The SRTS committee has applied for numerous grants and they work to provide incentives for families to walk/bike safely to school. As part of the grant applications, there are parent surveys, teacher tallies and walking plans that identify needs. WOW is one element of SRTS.
